Many pet parents inadvertently bring harm to their dog or cat by simply leaving a purse, backpack or briefcase open and available somewhere in the house.
Especially during cold winter months bored, confined pets tend to get into things they shouldn’t, like the contents of mom’s handbag.
Pets ingesting human drugs account for over half the yearly calls to the Pet Poison Helpline. And antidepressants are the most common drugs swallowed by dogs and cats.
Other potentially toxic handbag items include asthma inhalers, gum and mints containing xylitol, cigarettes and other tobacco/nicotine products, and liquid hand sanitizers.
It’s a good idea to either hang pegs or designate a ‘bag drop-off area’ to insure no one leaves an open bag on the floor, the couch or a bed, perking the interest of a curious four-legged family member.

According to the folks at Pet Poison Helpline, they talk frequently to terrified pet owners whose dog or cat found an enticing ‘treat’ in a purse or backpack and gobbled it up.

Since during the winter months pets tend to be indoors more, a handbag or similar item lying open with contents exposed, can prove an irresistible temptation to a confined, curious and perhaps slightly bored pet.

Top 5 Most Common Purse Items That Poison Pets

Human medications.About half the yearly calls to the Pet Poison Helpline are because someone’s pet ingested a medication found in a handbag, book bag, duffel bag, etc.Human pills come in bottles, and the sound of a rattling pill bottle is very similar to the noise some dog toys make.

Both over-the-counter and prescriptions drugs can be a problem.

Very common OTC painkillers like Advil, Motrin and Tylenol, and human doses of prescription drugs for depression like Prozac and Effexor, can be toxic to pets.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil, Motrin and Aleve, can cause GI ulcers and kidney failure and are especially dangerous for kitties.

Just one Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be fatal to cats, and larger amounts can cause liver failure in a dog.

Antidepressants are the number one cause of calls to Pet Poison Helpline. Signs a pet has ingested one of these drugs include sedation, loss of coordination, agitation, trembling and seizures.

Asthma inhalers.If your dog bites into an asthma inhaler, it has the potential to result in acute, life-threatening poisoning. These inhalers contain highly concentrated doses of drugs like albuterol (a beta-agonist) and fluticasone (a steroid).If a dog punctures an inhaler by biting or gnawing it, she can be exposed to a massive single dose of a powerful drug which can bring on vomiting, agitation, heart arrhythmia, collapse, and ultimately, death.

Artificially sweetened gum and mints. Many ‘sugarless’ gums and mints contain xylitol– a sugar substitute highly toxic to dogs. Even a small amount of xylitol can result in a dangerous blood sugar crash in canines, and larger amounts can lead to liver failure.Symptoms of xylitol poisoning include vomiting, weakness, collapse, shaking and seizures.In addition to gum, mints and other sugarless candy, xylitol is commonly found in chewable vitamins, certain prescription drugs, dental hygiene products, nicotine gum and baked goods.

Cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and other products containing nicotine. Did you know a small dog can die from ingesting just three cigarettes, depending on the brand? Chewing tobacco is also toxic to dogs and cats, and so are stop-smoking products like nicotine gum.Signs of nicotine poisoning come on quickly and include elevated heart and respiratory rates, neurological symptoms, loss of bladder or bowel control, tremors, seizures, paralysis and death.

Hand sanitizer.Small bottles of hand sanitizer have become commonplace in purses, briefcases and backpacks. These products, which are used to kill germs, contain lots of alcohol. Alcohol (ethanol), is the germ-killing agent in these gels and liquids.If your dog were to ingest a small bottle of hand sanitizer, it would be about the equivalent of a shot of hard liquor. This could cause a severe drop in your pet’s blood sugar, loss of coordination, loss of body temperature, nervous system depression, coma, and death.

An Ounce of Prevention…

If your family is like most, chances are you can find an open handbag or other carryall bag within reach of your pet right now.

If so, you might want to designate a common surface in your home – close to the front door – as the ‘bag drop-off area.’ It should be high enough that its contents don’t draw your dog’s attention.

If you have a curious cat, then the requirement should be that all bags are zippered or snapped closed before leaving them in the ‘bag drop-off area.’

Another option would be to create a ‘bag hanging area’ by installing pegs, coat hooks or similar heavy-duty hangers close to the front door, and assigning one to each member of the family.

2011, you understand why I am so enamored with him. He has a way of speaking that is very exciting to hear (Boaz keeps you engaged and awake) and he has so many great ideas that might be a little out of the box. Yeah, I love that!! He’s so cool, he only needs one name…yah, he’s really that good. But Boaz is NOT a pretentious jerk like some big name speakers can be! He is engaging and a delight to experience. He has a genuine interest in others, and it shows.

Boaz inspired me to finally start making some videos. You will see many more in the future. They are all based on things I am passionate about. Stay tuned.

It was hard to miss this story in the news last week – “Italian ship, with over 4,000 people, runs aground near the island of Giglio.”

The fact that such an event could take place in modern times, with loss of life, is beyond belief. One would think, with all of our modern GPS and other electronic systems, that a Titanic-like accident would not happen in 2012. But, it did.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, is under arrest and may face charges.

It appears, from news reports, that Captain Schettino allowed the ship to divert off course so he could get closer to the island of Giglio. The result of this decision was a disaster as the ship apparently ran into a huge boulder, ran aground, and started to list.

I see a correlation between this incident and how many of us run our lives. I’m talking to me as much as I’m talking to anyone else.

Much of the time we know which course we should be taking. However, we get off course and then we’re surprised when things go wrong.

Examples of getting off course include not exercising regularly, smoking, excessive drinking, doing drugs, allowing ourselves to get overweight, getting used to a high level of stress, expressing a negative attitude, not nurturing our most important relationships, and not managing our finances productively.

I realize that it’s not easy to always do the best and right things for ourselves on a regular basis. We all have failures. We all get depressed. We all get upset.

However, here’s the definition of a Champion: A Champion does what has to be done, when it has to be done, whether they feel like it or not.

As I do over 100 seminars each year nationwide, there are days when I may feel tired, when I may be depressed over something, when I may not feel my best.

However, every one of my audiences deserves the best that I can give. They honor me by being there and it is my job to share at least one powerful idea with them that could potentially improve their lives. It’s my job to stay on course.

Thus, before I walk into any room to speak, I say to myself two words that get my attitude right and keep me on course: “It’s Showtime!”

That phrase could be used if someone needs to start eating healthier, to exercise regularly, to stop a bad habit, to manage money better, to improve a relationship, or something else. It can be used to get back on a good course.

Why don’t you and I both use that phrase a few times this week and see if we could sail more smoothly toward our most important goals?

You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness! Have a powerful day!

January 24: Join the OCA Protest at Monsanto‘s Annual Shareholders Meeting

What if Monsanto had to pay for its corporate crimes?

It is inevitable that one day Monsanto will be held responsible for the enormous human health and environmental damages arising from the so-called “responsible” use of its toxic pesticides, chemicals, and mutant genetically engineered seeds. If the Biotech Bully of St. Louis were to be held liable for its 100-year legacy of corporate criminality – carcinogenic chemical food sweeteners, Agent Orange, dioxin, Bovine Growth Hormone, poisonous herbicides, seed monopolization, and genetically engineered crops, the company’s shareholders would no doubt see the value of their Monsanto stocks plummet to zero.

Following up on two protests at Monsanto’s headquarters in 2011, OCA returns to St. Louis for the 2012 Monsanto shareholders’ meeting on January 24!

Please join OCA, Pesticide Action Network, and Harrington Investments (a socially responsible investor’s group) in St. Louis to support a shareholder resolution to examine the financial risks associated with genetically engineered crops. While an OCA representative is speaking inside the shareholders meeting, another group of us will be outside, peacefully picketing.

The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act

We are on the road to victory in California with coalition members, strategic allies, and key donors increasing their support all the time. We now have over 50 environmental, alternative health, and sustainable food organizations and businesses advocating for our cause. But, most importantly, we have over 1,500 dedicated CA volunteers trained and ready to hit the streets when signature gathering begins in February. You can go here to volunteer by gathering petition signatures in California.

This November 2012 California Ballot Initiative, which will require foods
sold in California retail outlets to be labeled as such, may be the most important GMO battle of all time. A win in California will mean radical changes to food labels everywhere. Producers will either have to change the way they market Frankenfoods or else stop using GMOs altogether. We think we can reverse the biotech strangle-hold on our food system in our lifetimes.

You don’t have to live in California to donate to this historic ballot initiative.

Consumers everywhere have a right to know what’s in the food we buy and eat and feed our children, just as we have the right to know how many calories are in the food we buy, or whether food comes from other countries like Mexico or China. In the past, we’ve successfully fought for labels telling us the country of origin of products, as well as whether foods have been irradiated. Now it’s time to stand up for our right to know which foods are laced with GMOs.

Efforts to enact labeling laws in Congress and in other state legislatures have been blocked by big food and chemical company lobbyists. Millions Against Monsanto Campaign Update

Sunday, October 16, 2011 was the biggest day of action for mandatory labels on genetically engineered food in U.S. history. Several hundred Millions Against Monsanto World Food Day events took place around the country.

In September 2012, building on the success of World Food Day 2011, OCA member activists are going to take even bigger action! This year, we are planning a nationwide Week of Action on September 17 – 20th to demonstrate against the Monsanto-sponsored 12th International Symposium on Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organisms also in St Louis, MO. We want to organize actions at the hundreds of Monsanto locations in the US and around the world in concert with a large demonstration in St. Louis.

OCA members have been diligently collecting signatures for our Truth-in-Labeling petition across the country for months now. New petitions are coming in almost daily and being added to our online system, but we need even more volunteers to help us gather signatures through 2012. In addition to the action in St. Louis, activists in each state will also hand deliver all of the petitions we’ve gathered to their state legislators, demanding mandatory labels for genetically engineered food and demonstrating that we truly are the Millions Against Monsanto.

What can you do to help this historic campaign? Download a PDF version of our petition. Take this petition to your workplace, your local co-op, house parties, farmers’ markets and wherever you can find people who demand the right to know what’s in our food.

Baby Food Update

Many of you took action on our alert “Tell Organic Baby Food Brands to Stop Using GMOs!” and received a misleading letter from Happy Bellies in response, denying that HAPPYBELLIES’ baby cereals contain GMOs and claiming that the DHA they use has been approved by the National Organic Standards Board.

While the NOSB did approve a generic form of DHA, this is not the DHA used in HAPPYBELLIES’ baby foods. This leaves HAPPYBELLIES in conflict with the national organic standards. We have been assured that this issue is under investigation by the National Organic Program, but we must keep the pressure on!

Happy new year to all my favorite professionals!

I am so happy and grateful to have you in my life and in my network of pros.

I actually have a lot to be grateful for.

I am surrounded by the best and brightest professionals.

More and more of the right people show up at the perfect time, all the time.

When I am religious about writing in my gratitude journal every day, I have so many more things to be grateful for. (show journal)

I am amazed at how easily things fall into place when you let go and Allow.

Let me say that again to stress the point.

When you relinquish control to your higher power and trust that everything will work out for the best, you allow good things to show up in your life.

For me it usually arrives in the form of people…who give me ideas of new ways to make a difference.

When I finally figured out that I didn’t have to control every little thing, and when I finally let go and let my higher power drive…it always turns out better than my human brain could ever imagine.

I’m not saying its easy to just let go…it took me awhile, but it is so worth it!

Here is the line that I tell myself;

I don’t know what (this request) looks like,

but I know its going to be great,

and I can’t wait (to see what happens).

I am wishing you a very prosperous and happy 2012! You can do it! …Whatever that might be.

Another great quote from one of my heroes, Napoleon Hill.

I hope you have a day filled with positive thoughts and are able to find a way to spin things that happen into the best possible outcome. Use “Up-Spiral-Thinking” to put the best possible spin on everything. You are in control of your day and decide how you let people affect you. Avoid the energy vampires and move on.

Make it a great day!

Human faults are like garden weeds. They grow without cultivation and soon take over the place if they aren’t thinned out.

Habits are formed so slowly that most of us don’t realize what is happening until the habits are too strongly entrenched to be broken. Seldom can one pattern of behavior be eliminated without replacing it with another. It has been said that nature abhors a vacuum and will always find something to fill a void. The best way to thin out the “weeds,” or faults in your character, is to identify those traits with which you are dissatisfied and replace them with their positive counterparts. If you have a tendency to lose your temper, for example, find a replacement for your anger. Neutralize it with a positive expression or affirmation, such as, “No one can make me angry unless I let them. I will not let anyone else control my emotions.”

Invisible Boundary – Another Great Post from Mary Morrissey

I know I’ve said this before, but today Mary’s post really hit home for me. It is so true. When you stop trying to force things to happen in your life and just allow them to…suddenly things (the right people) start to appear.

I just had 2 of the best days of my life. I have been practicing gratitude daily and focusing on building up my business to be able to help more small business owners, plus starting my organic farm. I dropped all preconceived notions of what these both “had to” look like. I said to the universe, “I’m not sure exactly what this will look like, but I know its gonna be great and I cant wait to find out”.

I can’t wait to tell you all about it and have you see it come to fruition. Part of it has to do with the amazing ladies at Verde Eco Boutique. They truly understand People Helping People.

I was able to tour a perfect location to start my organic farm, thru a trusted business connection. Thanks Luke!

I also just had one of the best international speakers do a seminar for all the like minded people who made it a point to show up. Boaz was truly UNBELIEVABLE! …You had to be there.

Life is amazing! I love it.

Great-full Thanksgiving

I am grateful every day and regularly write in my gratitude journal. (a few things each day)Today I decided to make a more extensive list of things I’m grateful for in my life.

I am so Happy and Grateful;

For a wonderful husband who supports me and keeps me grounded.

For the physical ability to run.

For the unconditional love of my dog (ok, maybe not totally unconditional…he’s much more loving when the chicken is served on a timely basis).

For the beauty of nature all around me.

For my understanding of the law of attraction

For my ability to remain positive no matter what circumstances surround me.

That I am surrounded by like-minded professionals.

That I have a safe house to live in.

That I have a large loving extended family.

That I am able to work doing what I truly love and helping people at the same time.

That I am able to see, so I can appreciate the beauty all around me.

That I am able to speak, so I can communicate with others and be understood.

That I am able to hear, so I can understand and learn from others.

That I am spiritually enlightened to give credit to a higher power.

This is just a small sampling of what I came up with on Thanksgiving day. Lets see if you can come up with even more than I did. Please post a reply with all that you are grateful for in your life. Its amazing what you can come up with when you really think about it.

I would like to make a suggestion that after you create your initial list of gratitude, you commit to write down at least one thing daily that you are grateful for. It is amazing to see the outcomes you will experience when you spend time each day focusing on gratitude. Maybe instead of watching the morning news and hearing about all the death and corruption, you spend a few moments contemplating all that you have to be thankful for?

An attitude of gratitude is a beautiful thing. You will be a more desirable person to be around when you speak of the things you are grateful for instead of “Did you hear about…blah blah blah”

I like to start the day out easy and focus on the fact that I can breathe, run, see, etc. I breathe in the air and head out to take the dog for a walk. I always find something else to appreciate along the way. Sun, trees, colorful flowers, lucky pennies, rain for my garden, friendly neighbors, beautiful scenery, purple fuzzy mittens, my beautiful dog, etc.

I attached a quick pic taken during our jog on Thanskgiving morning about 6:30am. Pardon the fuzziness…it was hard to keep him still for a second or two and it wasn’t very light out.

Give it a try and let me know how you do with this exercise. Remember that your Mindset Matters more than anything in your life. If you focus on all the things that are good in your life, you will naturally attract more of the same.
